What's the Difference?
If you've been looking into lessons in Cabarete, you've probably noticed schools use "kitesurfing" and "kiteboarding" almost interchangeably — and you might be wondering if they're actually different sports, or if you're searching for the wrong thing. Here's the short answer: they're the same sport, and the terms are used differently depending on where you are and who you ask.
Where the Two Names Come From?
The sport started in the late 1990s and picked up two names at once. "Kitesurfing" caught on first, especially in Europe, because early riders used surf-style boards and rode with a more wave-riding stance. "Kiteboarding" became popular in the US as the equipment shifted toward twin-tip boards, which look and ride more like wakeboards or snowboards.
Today, both words describe the exact same activity: using a large controllable kite to harness wind power and glide across the water on a board.
